Cochituate Media founder Elana Varon is an award-winning editor and writer with more than 20 years of experience covering technology, innovation, environmental sustainability, politics and public policy. A creative and business-focused leader, she excels at developing and executing compelling and innovative content, delivering leading-edge insight to executive readers both in print and online.
Elana’s work encompasses a variety of digital editorial projects for global IT companies, consultancies, publishers and non-profits. Among her recent assignments: managing an online community, writing and editing feature articles, white papers and case studies about emerging technologies, analyzing survey data and editing a digital magazine. She has been a contributing editor to Data Informed, a website covering big data, where she wrote about leadership and management of data-driven organizations. In addition, Elana has written about digital marketing trends for CMO.com.
As executive editor of CIO magazine from 2006-2011, Elana led a team of writers, editors and designers to produce the industry-leading publication for business and technology executives. An experienced facilitator and project manager, Elana worked with the CIO editorial team to plan and execute a comprehensive magazine redesign that won a 2009 Folio Ozzie award and a 2010 Gold award from the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE).
Throughout her career, Elana has focused on testing new editorial formats and creating new types of content, beginning as a reporter for a subscription-based online news service in the early 1990s. As Web publishing gained momentum, she launched and edited one of her newspaper’s first microsites, curating content related to one of the publication’s key coverage areas.
During more than a decade at CIO, Elana produced innovative multimedia editorial packages and conceived and oversaw development of an online database. She’s also led numerous projects to develop editorial coverage based on original survey research. This work has been recognized by American Business Media, the ASBPE and Media Business. Her CIO column, “The Sustainable Enterprise,” received a regional Gold award in 2011 from ASBPE, while her feature articles for the magazine and CIO.com have been cited on numerous websites as well as used as teaching materials.
Elana holds a B.A.degree in English from Tufts University and an M.A. in Public Policy from Duke University. She has experience working with a variety of publishing software platforms.
